Updated COVID Vaccines Now Available
Currently there are 3 COVID vaccines available (Pfizer, Moderna and Novarax) for 2023-2024.
The 2 updated mRNA COVID vaccines by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have been approved by the FDA and CDC in mid- September of 2023 for everyone ages 6 months and older. The vaccines target XBB.15, a subvariant of Omicron that dominated the United States-and the world-from November 2021 until earlier this year. The CDC said the updated vaccines should also work against currently circulating variants (EG.5 and BA.2.86) of the SARS-CoV-2 virus- many of which descended from, or are related to, the XBB strain.
In October 2023, a few weeks after the new mRNA vaccines were approved, the FDA amended its earlier Novavax authorization to allow for a new adjuvanted 2023-2024 Novarax vaccine for ages 12 and older to target the XBB.1.5 strain. The Novarax vaccine is the only protein-based non-mRNA updated COVID vaccine available in the U.S.
Symptoms of COVID
COVID symptoms for this fall do not appear to have changed much from what they were last year. The symptoms are: fever or chills, sore throat, body aches, headache, shortness of breath, fatigue, congestion or runny nose, cough, new loss of taste or smell, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.
Face Coverings or Masks
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not announced new mask mandates, however, it continues to recommend masks as a critical tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Protecting Yourself and Others
- Stay home if you are sick
- Cough and sneeze into your elbow NOT YOUR HAND
- Wash hands properly and frequently
- Clean and disinfect high touch surfaces often
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth without washing hands
Who Should Be Tested
- Most people will have mild illness and can recover at home without medical care and may not need to be tested.
- CDC has guidance for who should be tested, but decisions about testing are made by state and local health departments or healthcare providers.
- If you have symptoms of COVID-19 and want to get tested, call your healthcare provider first.
- You can also visit your state or local health department’s website to look for the latest local information on testing.
